All Cars Transfer to Bloomingdale's! 🛍 From their humble beginnings in 1872, Brothers Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale opened their first store, the Great East Side Bazaar, at 938 Third Avenue at 56th Street, #NewYork, #NY. As their retail business grew, so did their space requirements. In 1886, the brothers expanded their operations by moving to the corner of 59th Street and Third Avenue. Within 15 years of their move, they began acquiring the land around their store. By 1927, they owned the entire block from Lexington to Third Avenue and 59th to 60th Street. Around this time, the Bloomingdales entrusted Turner to build one of the world’s most iconic department stores. In 1929, Turner began the expansion of Bloomingdale’s. In Q1 2024, building costs increased due to mega projects in advanced technology. The Turner Building Cost Index rose 0.93% from Q4 2023 and 4.37% from Q1 2023, reaching a value of 1408. Of note is that workforce development initiatives enhanced skilled labor availability, yet long lead times for mechanical and electrical equipment remain. Who was Ward Melville 👢🕹? In 1925, #TurnerNewYork completed Melville Shoe’s headquarters for $200k, a company owned by Ward Melville. Who was Ward, you ask? Ward was an army veteran who produced shoes for soldiers during World War One. In 1922, he and his partner, Franklin McElwain, launched the Thom McAn shoe brand. By 1939, the two had 650 stores across America. They were so successful that they launched and/or bought other retailers, some of which you may know: CVS Pharmacy, MARSHALLS LLC, and who could forget #KBToys! Ward was also a generous man. After moving to Long Island, NY, he donated 400 acres of land and money to New York State to establish what is now Stony Brook University. The building at 189 Hudson was converted into luxury condos and renamed 195 Hudson. #BuiltbyTurner
