🔐 When safeguarding your Social Media accounts, passwords are not enough anymore. Take additional security measures to prevent takeover of your accounts.   Every couple weeks, I get a call from a victim reporting that their social media account has been compromised and taken over by a hacker, former romantic interest or arch enemy of the victim. Even worse, the victim's social media accounts are often used for both work and personal relationships.   These accounts are usually protected by passwords that have been compromised and are available on the dark web. Sometimes the email account used for verification is compromised, with the same end results.   Let's explore additional layers of defense to fortify your social media presence:   🔒 Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA wherever possible. It adds an extra verification step, typically a one-time code from a mobile app or sent to your phone, making it tougher for attackers to gain access.   More advanced 2FA like hardware security keys or passkeys that use cryptographic security “keys” stored on your computer are great ways to increase your account security.   📧 Secure Email: Ensure the email associated with your social media is well-protected. If it's compromised, it can serve as an entry point for hackers to reset your passwords on multiple accounts.   🔒 Strong, Unique Passwords: While we're discussing alternatives, don't neglect strong, unique passwords. Password managers can help you keep track of them.   🔒 Regular Check-Ins: Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity. Some platforms offer login history, which can help you spot unauthorized access.   ❔ Security Questions: Be cautious with the information you provide for security questions. Avoid easily guessable answers based on public information.   🔔 Beware of Phishing: Don't click on suspicious links or enter your credentials on dubious websites. Phishing remains a common tactic that is very effective.   By incorporating these additional security measures, you can protect your social media accounts from most threat actors.
